Projectarian's Year of Fur

STYX THE TREE KANGAROO IS HERE!

Styx the Tree Kangaroo is finally here! I upgraded her look a little since the first time you saw her, to add more detail. I included an extra colour into the palette for more contrast on her front legs, ears and tail, I gave her a pouch, and added more detail to her tail. Now she’s ready to meet the world, looking her best:

Styx is designed with fur yarn, which also means she’s made with simple shapes to keep the pattern as stress-free as possible while working with the more challenging fiber. She does have some finer details on her face, using plain yarn to give her an ultra cute and realistic ‘roo snout!

All my furry patterns are intended to be fun rather than frustrating, because fur yarn can be a little harder to work with. To help you along the way, I have gathered the best fur yarn crocheting hacks into this video that is guaranteed to give you an easier time working with textured yarn. These handy techniques work for any fur or textured yarn, including chenille.

Speaking of chenille, one of my pattern testers tried Styx with chenille yarn, and it turned out very cute, although it is important to note that the model’s proportions are definitely affected by the yarn. Another tester made Styx with plain yarn, which had a similar result to chenille. Here are all the adorable projects from my test team with credit in order of appearance: A huge thank you to my beautiful and talented testers, Celine (@branouche), Mia (@mightystargazer), Julia (@julikahuli), Haylee (@hhhxoart), Marilyn (@fish_marilyn), Sharon (@stitchesandfiber), Jessica (@jessica.lake.547), Casie (@crafts_by_casie), and Stacey (@curlymoon_crochet).

Styx is a rather large model, about the size of a real tree kangaroo. She works up relatively fast for her size, being made with such bulky fiber. This also makes her quite floppy and poseable – a cuddly cutie for sure!

I originally designed Styx the Tree Kangaroo for the Amigurumi.com design contest. Every few years I do this silly thing where I delude myself into thinking I could win that contest, and so I enter it, only to feel like a huge loser in the end when I don’t win and can’t handle disappointment. This year my misplaced optimism had me designing Beam the Rainbow Monitor – which I actually enjoyed so much that the fun of designing it alone was enough to make it worth it. Beam’s pattern is coming your way early next year so make sure you have joined my mailing list to be notified when it comes out.

In the meanwhile I have another dragon pattern coming up for you. It should be out later this month (Dec 2025) so make sure you’re on the mailing list! Here’s a little sneak peek for you in the meanwhile:

I hope you will try Styx the Tree Kangaroo’s pattern and have loads of fun with it! Please post your #StyxTheTreeKangaroo pics and tag me @Projectarian because I cannot wait to see your cuties! Thanks for visiting and I’ll see you soon for the next project.
